Tongariro National Park has two commercial ski fields within its boundaries, including New Zealand's largest, Whakapapa. They are rather odd things to have within the National Park; in fact the only other ski field in the country that actually falls within a national park is Rainbow, near Nelson. Skiing was first attempted in Tongariro National Park in 1913 when two keen railway engineers, Bernard Drake and William Mead, tried out skis they had ordered from Switzerland and with the help of an instruction book they had ordered from England. They Icoached to the old Waihohonu Hut, which was one of the main access points to the park at that stage and tried out their new skis on Tama ridge. The skiing experiment was such a success that before they left the area they decided to form a ski club. They posted up a note in the hut inviting interested parties to contact them. Twelve members of the new Ruapehu Ski Club filled the tiny Waihohonu Hut the following year for its Ifirst annual meeting. Tum to page 2
