Craftsmen gather for show
'Hunters and Collectors' is the name of an unusual craft show which was due to open in Ohakune this week, in the shop next to the BNZ in Goldfinch Street. The main organisers are local 'heavy-duty' furniture makers, Brian Robinson and Paul van Hees. The pair make outdoor (sometimes used indoor) tables with built-in bench seats from logs. They use techniques borrowed from Canadian log house building, and Paul's work can be seen around town, outside the Ohakune Hotel and Trust Bank. Their work is just a small part of the exhibition, with about a dozen artisans represented. Among those whose work will be on show are, Paul Beckett and his large wood turned bowls, Paul
Begg's turned wooden ums, Alistair Gray's log furniture, Daryl Lim Yock's carving, Denise Cooper's bone carving, John Ball's wood work, Sheena Haywood's photographs and Richard Milne's postcards. A special part of the exhibition will be a tribute to local man, Robin Rowles, who was killed in a car accident on Tuesday last week. Robin's taxidermy work was to be displayed for sale in the show. Because his death has cut short his talent, Robin's parents want to keep the works that were to be sold at the exhibition, but they have agreed that they should still be put on display. Also on display will be a collection of vintage chainsaws, belonging to Ron Walkley.
