This season, he says, there has been less snowcover and generally hardpacked snow resulting in greater congestion on runs and therefore more collisions. Such conditions tend to lead to fractures. But with the latest snowfalls and the much softer snow, strains (particularly knee strains) are more likely. The Ski Patrol has many tips on avoiding accidents, lessons are particularly important. "Most skiers (who have accidents) are skiing at the very edge of their ability," Alistair said. He also recommends you eat a substantial breakfast before you go skiing, dress warmly with layers and warm up to avoid injury.
Awareness is also very important. "North Islanders are generally unaware of alpine conditions," Alistair said, "so it is a matter of public education."
