On show
An exhibition of paintings and drawings submitted for the 15th annual Ohakune Art Awards will be on view to the general public at the Ohakune Primary School from Monday 5 September to Saturday 11 September from 10am each day. Ninety-five artists have submitted a total of over 150 works in a variety of media - oils, watercolours, pastels, pencil, acrylics etc. However, this year the Awards - which are to be judged by Judith Trevelyn of the Wellington Academy of Fine Arts this Saturday - are not given in specific media categories but will be judged overall on their merit alone. The winner of the Elizabeth Baigent Premier Art Award (any media) will receive $2000. The winner of the Life Study Award will receive
$500 as will the winner of the Ruapehu District Council Award (formerly the Ohakune Borough Council and the Waimarino District Council Awards). The winner of the Young Artist's Award will receive a cash prize as well as a subsidy to attend a course of his or her choice at an art or design school, polytechnic etc. Finally there is an Open Class Award with $1500 which is left entirely to the discretion and choice of the judge. Awards convener, Ellen Gould of Ohakune, said she was pleased to see an increased number (13) of young artists putting in work this year. The exhibition will be officially opened at 1.30pm this Sunday (members of public welcome) and will close at 4pm on Saturday 11 September.
