Waiouru man top principal

Waiouru School principal Tauri Morgan recently took on wider educational responsibilities when he was elected to the executive of the New Zealand Principals' Federation. It is a prestigious and demanding position for Mr Morgan to take on, with the NZPF being responsible to some 2100 principals and their primary schools nationwide. Three vacancies were available on the executive and all three went to Maori principals. It is the first time in the NZPF's 12-year history that any Maori has held a position on the Executive The Federation as a body speaks regularly with the Ministry of Education on all facets of primary education while individual Executive members act on subcommittees and as spokespeople for the Federation in particular areas, Mr Morgan said. Already he has been called upon to address the issues of monitoring and assessment, and rural education for the Federation. Other areas in which Mr Morgan will play a role include developing a Maori perspective and principal's welfare.

The vast majority of the 15-member Executive come from metropolitan schools so Mr Morgan will be an important asset to the Executive bringing with him the experience he has gained from ten years in rural education at Waiouru.
