• Police stress the importance of persons planning alternative activities on the mountain to notify the appropriate authorities before doing so. The reminder comes after Turoa staff advised Ohakune Police of a vehicle left unattended in the Turoa carpark last Wednesday evening. After a routine check on the vehicle, police discovered that the owner of the vehicle wa s involved in snow-caving activities on the mountain but had failed to notify authorities of their intentions. Police Sergeant Bob Evans said people planning tramping, hunting, snow-caving or any alpine activity should notify the Department of Conservation or the local Police Station before embarking. • Ohakune Police executed a warrant under the Sale of Liquor Act on the premises of a local restaurant owner (name suppressed). The owner/operator was charged with offences under the act and will appear in the Ohakune District Court on Thursday 16 August. • An Old Station Road residence was burgled on Wednesday night. A Winchester 44 and .303 rifle were stolen in the break-in. Police enquiries are continuing. • A 17-year old youth - Tahi Laxon Sweet - itinerant of Ohakune, was arrested by police in relation to an unprovoked assault that occurred in the township last week. A 16-year old associate was also apprehended by police and charged under the Children and Young Person' s Act. • The driver of a vehicle which slid down an embankment above the railway turn table in Railway Row last Friday, escaped injury. Police officials said the driver misjudged the road and failed to negotiate the bend. • A set of skis was stolen from the roof rack of a vehicle parked in Mangawhero Terrace on Saturday night.
