Truck crash blocks highway

• Ohakune Police and rescue services attended a motor vehicle accident on Provincial State Highway 49 yesterday, when a truck and trailer unit overturned near the former Karioi Forestry Headquarters shortly before 8am. No injuries resulted, although traffic was diverted for some time while rescue services attempted to right the vehicle which had blocked the highway. • Two Ohakune police constables were involved in the rescue of a 33-year old Napier man from the slopes of Mt Ruapehu on Sunday. The man, a member of the Heretaunga Tramping Glub, was airlifted from the southern slopes of Mt

Ruapehu by the New Zealand Rail Rescue helicopter after suffering froin fatigue and hypothermia. He was taken to Taupo Hospital and released yesterday. Ohakune Police were notified by an amateur radio operator from Foxton who had picked up the call via a call from a member of the party using the amateur radio network • Overnight Friday, a male caucasian in his 20's was disturbed damaging cars parked outside the Ohakune Kings Court. Proprietor Keith Pitman gave chase and apprehended the offender,

then handed him over to the police. The man was charged with two counts of wilful interference, two counts of unlawful damage and one count of breach of bail. Ohakune Police commended Mr Pitman on his quick action and the support of patrons. • Police are investigating incidents of intentional damage to cars parked in Rimu and Thames Streets during the weekend. • Two youths were observed damaging cars parked behind the Ohakune Hotel on Friday night. Police were noti-

fied, and gave chase when the two youths attempted to flee the scene. One offender was apprehended and spoken to. The other was located the following day. Both were charged with wilful interference, intentional damage and attempted unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.
