Police promote business plan

Waiouru Police are encouraging the local business community to get involved in a project to set up a business support network. The scheme has been initiated as part of the Wanganui District Police's five-year corporate plan, focussing on crime prevention. The network will be run along the same lines as Neighbourhood Watch, with the local business community being encouraged to look after one another, according to Constable Chris Scales. To get the plan into action a meeting will be

held on 8 September at 7.30pm in the Waiouru School Hall to give the business community an opportunity to speak with a Wanganui Crime Prevention officer, Senior Constable Harry Reid and

security experts. The many sporting and social clubs from around Waiouru are also encouraged to attend the meeting and become part of the network. Topics such as

shoplifting, security of premises and crime prevention strategies will be discussed. Chubb Security will also have a display showing the various types of security available for

business premises. A recent visit by a crime prevention officer from Taihape found many of the businesses in Waiouru were not up to scratch in terms of security.

Community commitment to crime prevention is fundamental and Constable Scales believes Waiouru already has a good track record with people responding to the 'Police File' in the

Bulletin and assisting with information. Now the police are looking for mutual community support to protect Waiouru's growing local business. "We can't do it without your help," he said.
