Ohakune/Karioi finished the season in fine form on Sunday, but lost the Wanganui Senior Combined Club Championship to Kairau at Spriggens Park 19-11. However that still left them a well-earned sec-ond-place in the points table. Dion Maua clinched the game for Kairau with his four penalty goals and a conversion. It was a very tight game with Ohakune/Karioi scoring a try by Aisea Batibasaga and two penalties by Lachlan Harding. Ohakune/Karioi were most enterprising at times moving the ball around, but could not elude the defence of the Kaiwini's. Richard Mathews and Richard Lindsay worked well in the back of the line-out. Veteran Whetu Mareikura was still in good form as half-back and Josia Vokaibusa (Joe) played hard as did Aisea Batibasaga looking dangerous when he got the ball. The Wills brothers, Mike and Brendon, as usual worked
well together in the front row as did Tony Bird at lock. Coach Lachlan Harding said he was very proud of his guys, they played consistently all season, enabling the team to make it to the finals. He said "we didn't lose the finals, we came second." Coach Harding and Captain Brendan Wilson thanked all the Ohakune/Karioi supporters whose support made front page news in Wanganui. Tries : Aisea Batibasaga one. Penalties: Lachlan Harding two. Player-of-the-day: Batibasaga. Hooker Brendon Wills, 20, has been selected for the Wanganui representative team. He played his first game on Saturday at Spriggins Park. Ohakune/Karioi senior reserves are also in their finals for the McKee Cup and play the curtainraiser to the representative game against East Coast this Saturday.

Defending 1992 Wanganui Women's rugby champions Raetihi were unable to contain a second half-effort by Wanganui Marist who won 38-9 on Saturday. At the break the score was 10-9 to Marist with Pauline O'Leary scoring for Marist and then Rachael Munn crossing over the line. Sherry Hansen kept Raetihi in the game with some superb goal kicking from way out on the side-line. However after the break the Marist fitness and experience showed as they quickly rattled on another 28 points. Players who stood out for Marist were: forwards, Mary Kailahi, Caren Stead and Nikki Inwood and in the backs Vicky Pearce and Pauline O'Leary. For Raetihi in the forwards were
flankers Sherry Hansen and Fiona Brown and hooker Cherylee Bishop who took some good tight heads at scrum times and put in some good tackles. In the backs were Michelle Kui who had another busy defensive game and Tinga Matinga who really knocked over her opposition with some awesome tackling. The game was played at a hectic pace with both teams content to run the ball. The Raetihi forwards did well to contain the much bigger Marist side and showed a lot of heart when running with the ball. At the end of the day Marist deserved to win the championship title with some solid defence and very creative play.
