Cherry trees to stay

Removing the cherry trees from Goldfinch Street has befen put on hold at the request of the mayor, Garrick Workman, after he was presented a petition to save them. Mr Workman has advised the Waimarino Community Board by way of a report in their meeting agenda for Thursday, that he has asked the chief executive to stop the removal until the board can further discuss the matter. Local resident Giadys Goldfinch had also written to the mayor ' asking for the trees to be saved. She pointed out that they were among

several that were planted in memory of her father, James Goldfinch, who was once mayor of Ohakune. She asked that if any of the trees were in fact diseased (she expressed doubt), that they be replaced with a similar type of tree. "It would be a fine gesture if all the trees which were removed when the street was widened could also be replaced," she asked. "This would restore the scene to its former beauty." Petition organiser Bea Barnes said the trees that were proposed to be Tum to page 2
