Melbourne trip for gymnast

The Wanganui Motors Turoa Tumblers banner flew proudly in Auckland on 24 and 25 July when Warwick Hays was placed second in the Auckland Senior Artistic Championships. After the competition the national men's coach, Howard Johnson, announced this tournament was the qualifying event to select the New Zealand team to compete in Melbourne at the Australian Championships in early October. By placing second on four apparatus and third on a fifth one Warwick easily qualified for his second trip to Australia. The hard work will now really intensify for the New Zealand Championships in September. Warwick still has to perfect a full-turn release move on the high

bar which will bring this apparatus up to the level of the other five.

Fund-raising for the trip will start in earnest shortly and the club hopes the past

generosity of locals and visitors alike will be repeated as over $1,000 is

needed for Warwick's airfares, accommodation and uniform.
