Tracks to be checked for biking
Several tracks in the Tongariro/Taupo area are being assessed as to their suitability for use by mountain bikers. Mountain bikirig has increased in popularity over the last few years and questions have been raised by several user groups as to whether bikers should be allowed to
ride on certain tracks in the area. Mountain biking is not allowed in Tongariro National Park and Kaimanawa Forest Park and some other protected areas in the Tongariro/Taupo Conservancy. A recent application to operate a commercial mountain biking concession on the Tongariro River Walk highlighted areas of conflict by various groups that use the track.
"It's a complex issue," said Regional Conservator Paul Green. "Before giving a concession we first need to decide whether mountain biking should be allowed on any track. "The Department has developed national 'Draft Guidelines for Use of Bicycles on Tracks Managed by the Department, and we intend using these guidelines to determine which tracks in the conservancy
are suitable for mountain biking. Once possible mountain bike tracks are identified the Department will consult with representatives of key user groups. Naturally the conflict between users is a key point and consultation is seen as essential by the Department before any final decision is made regarding a particular track. "Mountain bikers have used the Tongariro River Walk for sometime," Mr Green said. "The track is popular with anglers and walkers who have expressed concern about safety on the track as well as damage to the track by bike tyres. The Tongariro River Walk is also a popular track for mountain bikers. They like its proximity to
town and it's not a technically difficult track - many families bike it." At their June meeting the Tongariro/Taupo Conservation Board made a recommendation to the Department to monitor and analyse the use of the Tongariro River Walk before deciding on whether the concession should be given. While no final decision has been reached regarding the future of mountain biking and on the Tongariro River Walk in particular, the Department intends to have all key tracks in the area assessed under the new guidelines by the beginning of next summer. Copies of the draft guidelines are available from the Department' s Turangi office.
