Maori week at Pipiriki

Pupils of Pipiriki School recently experienced first hand, traditional Maori crafts and food preservation techniques, at the hands of long-term Whanganui River resident, Mrs Fanny Bell. During the four day project, pupils learned the fundamental techniques of traditional weaving and crafts, and food preservation. The children were advised on the uses of muka (flax), with practical lessons in mat weaving and producing a kono (food basket). The technique of preserving vegetables using native fern was also explored. All are techniques that Mrs Bell - an eighth generation member of the Ngati-hau-nui-a-paparangi tribe at Jerusalem - incorporates in day-to-day life. Self-sufficient for the past 16 years, Mrs Bell said there is growing evidence of more people returning to the old traditions, due to the current economic situation.
