PM opens Knoll Ridge Chalet
Whakapapa Skifield's brand new Knoll Ridge Chalet was officially opened by Prime Minister Jim Bolger, at a private function on Saturday. Over 600 people, including invited guests, dignitaries and ski field staff attended the ceremony, held in the functions room in the chalet's upper level. The programme included a welcoming speech by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts' general manager Dave Mazey, and board chairman, Roger Manthel. Delegates of the Tu wharetoa tribe held a Mihi (Maori greeting) and Karakia (blessing), before the official speech by the Right Hon Jim Bolger. The Prime Minister's speech highlighted the government's confiderice
in and commitment to New Zealand tourism. "A $2.5 million investment in the Whakapapa ski area which is designed to serve tourists is the type of confidence I welcome", said Mr Bolger. "The practical reality is that this region is taking off: 7,000 people visit Whakapapa on a busy day, and 280,000 visited last winter", he continued. "Break a leg" was the Prime Minister's closing advice to the visitors gathered for the function. Mt Ruapehu once again proved its unpredictable and extreme weather conditions when high winds closed the lower chairlifts. The Prime Minister and his party opted to experience 'true blue' alpine conditions and were guided, on foot, down the mountain by RAL staff.
