The council accepted some of the recommendations made by the Waimarino Community Board on the Mangapurua Road issue, at its meeting last Friday. The Ruapehu District Council resolved to inform the Department of Conservation that the RDC is not prepared to
consider the closure of the remaining section of the road until Waitangi Tribunal claims are settled; That Doc be advised that no funding for the maintenance of the road be guaranteed until further negotiations between the council and the Waimarino Community Board have taken place; and that the council accepts that until funding is
made available there is no obligation on the DoC to construct a corralling area, "but notes that members of the local community have offered to assist the department with road maintenance and construction." The council rejected the suggested' resolution of council officer Bruce Dobson, which supported the setting up of a horse
corral for hunters at Aisalbies Clearing, with road maintenance to that point(stiIl some seven kilometres short of the valley floor, where hunters want to be able to ride to). Mr Dobson said he had suggested that resolution because he believed that it would benefit the greatest number of current and potential road users.
