1080 for Ruapehu possums
Why is it acceptable to lay 1080 poison near settlements like Raurimu and Owhango, while trapping only is allowed near larger towns like Taumarunui. That was the question put by Ruapehu District councillor Tony Hawkins during discussion on the regional council's plans for a 1080 drop to kill possums, as part of the TB eradication programme. He said the poison was just as dangerous in small settlements as in larger ones. ' Council chief executive Cliff Houston said the trapping was to take place in "the middle of town" (Taumarunui) while the poison drop was on the periphery of the smaller settlements. Mr Hawkins disagreed. He said many dogs had died in past programmes due to unprofessional practices. Cr John Compton suggested the regional council be asked to run a public awareness campaign along with the programme, to which the council agreed.
