A beer for the disabled ski team
It was standing room only at the Powderkeg Inn last week, for the national Steinlager Blue promotion that promises to raise up to $25,000 for the New Zealand Disabled Ski Team. Hundreds of party-go-ers succumbed to the appeal of free beer, food and entertainment on offer at the Ohakune Junction. The Steinlager Blue band kept patrons dancing into the wee small hours of the morning, while Powderkeg staff ensured everyone got their fair share of complimentary Steinlager Blue. New Zealand Breweries regional saies manager, Mark Q'Donnell, said the company leapt at the chance to assist the in-ternationally-ranked ski team by way of sponsorship. The promotion, entitled 'Blue for Gold', promises to donate 10
cents for every litre of Steinlager Blue consumed within the next three months and aims to raise $25,000 - a sum four times larger than any single contribution the team has ever received. "It's a chance for everyone to play a part in the success of some of our most outstanding athletes competing against the best on the other side of the world," said Mr O'Donnell. Around 100 bars in the North Island are taking part in the 'Blue for Gold' promotion. N.Z. Breweries' contribution will enable the New Zealand Disabled Ski Team to compete against the world's top disabled skiers at the Paralympics in Lillehammer, Norway, early next year. Ohakune 's disabled gold medallist Patrick Cooper, heads the 1993 contingent.
