New Ohakune retailer 'greeted' with burglary
• Ohakune's new music outlet, 'Noiseworks', in Cedar Mall was broken into overnight Saturday, with goods totalling $12,500 stolen. Property taken included stereo equipment, tapes and compact discs. Police say the offenders were sophisticated in their method of entry and execution of the crime. • Waimarino Police arranged accommodation for some of the 300 people stranded on the Desert Road last Friday. Around 100 cars were caught in a freak snow storm that forced the closure of the road late Friday morning. Travellers were rescued from their snowbound vehicles by Taihape Police and volunteers, and Waiouru Army Training Group personnel. They were transported to Waiouru township and offered food and overnight accommodation. Most travellers were able to return to their vehicles and finish their journeys the following day. • An intruder who entered the unlocked garage of a Miro Street, Ohakune, residence last Tuesday night managed to break into a vehicle before being scared off by the occupants of the house. Enquiries are continuing. • A chalet in Miro Street, Ohakune, was burgled sometime in the last month. The burglary was discovered on Wednesday. A list of stolen property was unavailable yesterday. • A house on Old Horopito Road was burgled sometime between 10am-2pm on Wednesday 23 June. A Kambrook TV, Philips video, Sony stereo, skis and ski boots were stolen. Police enquiries are continuing. • Waimarino Police were alerted by the staff of Raukawa Falls Store on the Parapara Highway last Wednesday, when an individual presented a National Bank Visa card for payment. The person 's behaviour was re-
garded as suspicious by staff. Police apprehended the individual and recovered the card, earlier reported stolen. Court action will ensue. • Two vehicles parked at a property in Seddon Street, Raetihi, had their tyres slashed overnight Thursday. A knife was used in the incident. • Overnight Friday, a car parked at the intersection of Arawa and Clyde Streets, Ohakune, was entered and searched. A brick was thrown through a window to gain entry. • A Pitt Street, Raetihi, residence was burgled overnight Friday 25 June. A quantity of traveller's cheques, American currency and jewellery was stolen. The burglary occurred while the owners were away. Police are following strong leads.
