Hunterville beat Raetihi

by shelly shearsby The game between Raetihi and Hunterville Senior Rugby teams on Saturday 19 June, held at the Raetihi Showgrounds, was a close game with Hunterville winning 10-3. In the first minute of the game W TeHuia of Raetihi attempted to kick a penalty from almost halfway which didn't quite make it. Six minutes later D McDonnell tried to kick a penalty which he missed. Hunterville scored the only try of the game which was converted by Noll B Muir. D McDonnell had another attempt at kicking a penalty but as it looked like it was going over it hit the post and Raetihi players tried to

gain possession and score a try but they couldn't quite make it. Thirty minutes into the first-half D McDonnell put Raetihi on the score-board with a successfully kicked penalty. Five-minutes after Raetihi got on the score-board a fight broke out between R Jensen of Raetihi and S Edmonds of Hunterville due to a shoulder-barg-ing incident. As a result both players were sinbinned. Just before half-time B Muir missed a penalty kick for Hunterville. The half-time score was 7-3 to Hunterville. During the secondhalf of the game spectators were kept on their toes each time either team had possession of the ball. Another fight broke out in the second-half, this time between A McCann and four

Hunterville players. M Gordon of Raetihi went to help A McCann but the fight was broken-up and as the referee did not see that the cause of the fight was due to 'Hunterville's dirty tactics' (as spectators claimed) the referee took no action and let the game carry on. A few penalties were given to both sides during the second-half. B Muir of Hunterville attempted to kick two penalties but only one was successful which took the score to 10-3 to Hunterville. When awarded a penalty Raetihi chose to run the ball and they almost scored the tries but due to the strong defence of Hunterville they couldn't make the tries. Both teams went well on defence with some good and bad tackling on both sides but their attack methods left a lot to be desired. Both teams did unnecessary forward-passes, knock-

ons and bad-passes. The two players who stood out for Raetihi were C Wilson in the forwards and in the backs, A McCann. Spectators no longer

have to try to remember the score or ask the person next to them what the score is when they watch a game at the Raetihi Show-grounds as Raetihi has now got a

score-board thanks to sponsorship by the Ruapehu Bulletin.
