Grant for musical writer

Local writer Jill Jriar has been granted $5000 by the 1993 Suffrage Year Centennial Trust - Whakatu Wahine - to complete a full-length musical, entitled 'Naomi and Ruth'. Mrs Friar, a full-time freelance writer and mother, partnered Auckland composer Dorothy Ker, to write and compose the musical that has a Biblical theme but with a modern-day emphasis. 'Naomi and Ruth' has two narrators - characters of the play - one being King David, the greatgrandson of Naomi, together with his daughter, Tamar. 'Naomi and Ruth' explores the social situation of women of Biblical times and makes a parallel to women of modern times. Mrs Friar is currently completing the musical's libretto and Miss Ker, the score. Mrs Friar said the fullscale musical will be completed optimistically at the end of the year, with plans to produce a simplified version specifically for provduction at primary and

secondary school level. The grant covers work costs and additional expenses, including the cost of arranging the mu-

sical score. Another musical is currently in the planning stages - this one with a pioneer New Zealand theme.
