General rate reduced

The proposed General rate for the Ruapehu district for the 1993-94 financial year is approximately half of that im-

posed in the current financial year. The main reason for this significant reduction from $1,607,700 to

$774,100 is the fact that the roading rate is no longer taken out of the General rate which means that the General rate can

be reduced from 0.54 cents in the dollar to 0.275 cents in the dollar. By removing the Roading rate from the General rate Council has been able to separate roading charges between the North and South regions of the District which have different problems and priorities. This would result in an increase of 27% from 53 cents in the dollar (in 1992-93) to 80 cents in the dollar for the South

(Waimarino and Waiouru) roading rate and an increase of 39% from 69 cents in the dollar (in 1992-93) to 96 cents for the North roading rate in 1993-94. Mayor Garrick Workman said that any spare money will be spent on upgrading rural roads instead of on those in urban areas as urban roads and footpaths had received a lot of funding recently.
