"Don't just ski there - do something else!"

Skiing is definitely not the only enjoyable activity for visitors to the Ruapehu region. Breathtaking scenery and some adventurous terrain make this area an ideal one for mountain biking. The Erua and Rangataua Forests have some of the best tracks around, although there are some areas where the activity is not permitted. Keen bikers should contact the local Department of Conservation rangers before heading out. V arious outlets hire mountain bikes by the hour or by the day. In-line skating is another sport which has taken off around the country, and the level roads around Ohakune make it an ideal place for this. Various outlets hire skates for between $6 - $8 per hour for adults and $4 - $5 for children. For the real thrill-seek-ers, there is an old favourite nearby - bungyjumping. A quick trip to Taupo for this exciting, popular madness, will see you right, or you can nip down to Mangaweka. There are a number of not so adventurous sports

in the area, including golf and tennis at the Turoa Alpine Village, for which equipment hire is available in town. The completion of the new Ohakune Squash Courts is a major asset to the community. The brand new 3-court complex provides an excellent alternative on closed days. Keys to the courts can be obtained from the Ohakune Information Centre or the BP service station on the main road, as well as becoming available from a number of businesses throughout the ski season. Racquet hire is also available in Ohakune. For a relaxing swim, you can choose from the indoor heated pool at the Powderkeg or take a drive to the bigger swimming complex at Waiouru Army Camp. Also at Waiouru is the Army Museum - an interesting and historical series of displays. Horse riding is another popular activity with operators in nearby Rangataua and at National Park.

The options are unlimited in the Ruapehu region, from gentle walks to treks to the summit of Mt Ruapehu, and anyone interested in any of the above activities should contact the local information centre or Department of Conservation. Please remember you are in an alpine environment and all precautions should be taken to ensure a safe joumey in whatever you do.
