What's up Whakapapa?

Whakapapa Skifield is gearing up for the 1993 ski season with the construction of a brand new Knoll Ridge Cafeteria. June 1 is the anticipated date of completion, with building contractors from both Hamilton and the Waimarino brought in for the $2 million project. The new-look cafeteria houses three levels: the uppr level comprising a food storage, preparation and servery area servicing a 300 seat cafeteria, with additional deck seating for 150 acessed through the cafeteria. The middle level will provide additional seating for people bringing their own food as well as to complement the upper level, with double the toilet facilities to cater for increased demand. A one-stop accessory shop on the lower level selling hats, gloves,

film, glasses, suntan lotion etc, will also operate a check-in service for skiers' bags at a nominal fee. Also on this level will be a Food Kiosk offering a range of food to complement the service in the upper cafeteria. Additional seating for 150 will be provided by a deck extending out from the Kiosk. Two main entrances will access the upper and lower levels and all levels will be connected by an internal stairway. The new facility will boast thoroughly modem decor, of a standard demanded by skiers in the '90's. Information As part of on-going developments to improve skier satisfaction at Whakapapa, Ruapehu Alpine Lifts intend to install an improved information system at the Top O' the Bruce. A public address system and a series of computer con-

trolled display panels will inform skiers of changes in conditions, ticket options, etc.
