Sports club spotlights novices

Although Waiouru's new Multi-Sports Club is open to everyone there's a special emphasis on beginners. The organisers want to get as many people involved as possible. "People think that triathlons are really, really hard but the sprint length ones are not that hard at all - anyone can do those," claims Cpl Marcus Fowler, one of the organisers for the club. "We're more for going to the events than training together - we did have plans for some combined

training every second Sunday. It happened a couple of times but we found we were just getting the same people with no new ones." The club's most successful event was the community triathalon held 24 February. 50 entries were received and the weather was glorious, with daylight saving helping to make the barbecue and prizegiving a success. The club supports swimming, road running, road cycling and mountain biking, kayaking, biathalons and triathlons. Organisers hope to extend the interests to other multi disciplinary events such as the Coast To Coast. The club membership is about 60 per cent military personnel and 40 per cent civilian with new members always welcome. For more information contact Cpl Fowler (06) 387 6111 ext7911.
