New kitchen for Army chefs
Last Friday the Band Three Cooks course at Waiouru's School of Transport and Catering got their first chance to try out the new kitchen. Stage one of a two part refurbishment for the catering school was completed this week. The refurbishment was carried out by local contractor Peter Craig Builders of Ohakune. "The major thrust was the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 which came into effect on 1 April," said Warrant Officer Class One Wayne Paul, Chief Instructor for the Army's Catering School.
"Our old kitchens wouldn't have complied. The main problem was the wooden fixtures. As employers we had to be conscious of our workers' safety. There was an urgent requirement to upgrade," said WOl Paul. The provision of male and female toilets and showers, a lecture room and a library were included in stage one of the refurbishment. In the Number Two kitchen the work has been extensive and the result is a lighter, brighter and much more functional training kitchen. In Stage Two the other kitchen will be refurbished and a presentation room and open plan wash-up area will be created..
