Throw a line for mum

A children' s fishing day is being held at the Tongariro Nation al Trout Centre, the first Sunday of the May school holidays - 9 May. Five children's fishing days are held each year.

They provide an opportunity for children aged between 6 and 14 to leam the skill of fly casting - and to have fun it's also one of the only angling occasions when catching a trout is guaranteed. The fishing starts at 9am and generally finishes around 3pm. All angling equipment is provided and

volunteers from local angling clubs together with staff from the Department of Conservation instruct the youngsters on fly casting. Once caught, the fish are weighed and measured and a commemorative certificate is issued. Members of the Tongariro and Lake Taupo Anglers Club (TALTAC) together with DoC staff volunteer their time to teach the youngsters how to fish. Barbecue food, hot drink and soup will be for sale, although some people barbecue their catch and have fresh trout for lunch. All profits go towards the future development of the trout centre. The grounds of the trout centre are surrounded by native bush and picnic facilities are available. The more grown-up

angler can cast a line in the adjacent world famous Tongariro River. New display panels in the hatchery buildings together with a new walkway along the Tongariro River make the Trout centre a place the whole family can

enjoy. Displays in the viewing chamber depict the history of the trout fishery as well as details of their life cycle, downstairs in the chamber visitors get a 'fish-eye' view of life. The Tongariro National Trout Centre is situated just south of Turangi on State j Highway One.
