Hunt warning

Hunters and trampers in the Ruapehu region are being reminded to "be prepared" and carry the essentials needed to survive. A survival blanket, equipment to start a fire and a source of high energy food such as chocolate is the minimum that should be carried, according to Department of Conservation officials. The message stems from a recent incident

where a hunter lost in the Kaimanawa Ranges for two days over Easter was saved primarily by the survival blanket stored in his pack. A survival blanket is lightweight and' is easily available from sports stores and St John Ambulance. DoC officials say that hunters should not venture into the bush without one, as well as enough gear for two nights in the open.
