Staff from the Pipiriki Department of Conservation have taken part in three rescues in the area this season - that's three more than usual, according to , ranger Dennis McDonnell. Two of the three incidents required the use of the Palmerston Northbased rescue helicopter. An older visitor was taken to hospital by helicopter suffering from chest pains. Mr McDonnell sited poor planning as being a contributing factor to the rescues. People were venturing into the Whanganui National Park poorly equipped, he said.
