KCE may support ice rink
Assistance may be offered to an Auckland iceskating rink operator to set up in business in Ohakune for the winter, in order to test the viability of a permanent rink for the town. King Country Energy director Bill Peach told the April board meeting that a lot of effort was being undertaken in Ohakune, by a group led by Dennis Beytagh, to
find funding for a feasibilify study of the prospect of a permanent ice-skating rink. He said an Auckland operator had a rink that could be set up in a demountable building on a site next to the Ohakune Club, which could be used to provide a practical feasibility study for the project. Mr Peach said local people were sceptical of the permanent skating rink proposals, fearing they may be left with a 'white elephant' but having a temporary rink in the town over the winter may help over-come their concems and create a demand for a permanent facility. He believed the project was worthy of board support because should a rink prove viable it would become a large customer. General manager Peter Till is to investigate what assistance could be offered.
