When it comes to the crunch...
When it comes to the crunch, Waimarino youngsters are tops and they proved it last week when hundreds participated in the 1993 Enza Apple Fun Crunch. In preparation for the event that took place at precisely 12.15pm on World Health Day, Wednesday 7 April, around half a million Royal Gala apples were delivered to primary and intermediate schools around the country. Youngsters involved in the promotion raised five cents from every apple eaten for teenage cancer sufferers (Canteen), and for the Tiri Tiri Matangi Open
Wildlife Sanctuary in Auckland 's Hauraki Gulf. ENZA, sponsors of the fund-raising promotion faced a major challenge of delivering 500,000 apples to 2,497 schools throughout New Zealand in time for the event. Apples were airfreighted as far as the Chatham and Pitt Islands especially for the occasion. All participating schools have the opportunity to win one of three Apple computer packages, as well as a number of schools receiving class prizes including subscriptions to NZ National Geographic.
