It's official. The Ruapehu Bulletin is not expensive. Yes, it is free to every household in the southern Ruapehu District plus National Park and Whakapapa - it's our advertising rates that we're talking about here. Bulletin advertising is cheaper than almost all other community newspapers in the country. (source: New Zealand Community Newspapers Casual Rates listing, March 1992). Out of more than 100 papers, there are only four that are cheaper, and even then their casual column/centimetre rate is only a few cents less, while their circulation is often much less, or their overall quality is much less. Some papers with similar circulation figures charge 50 per cent more than the Bulletin' s casual rate of $2.55 per column centimetre. And it's not cheap. Despite having the fifth lowest base advertising rate in the country, we believe the quality of the Bulletin matches many city papers with much larger circulations and staff. They may have more pages on average, but they often run at 70 to 80 per cent advertising, while the Bulletin often has more than 50 per cent of its space devoted to editorial. And we believe most of our editorial is of good quality. We run fewer press releases than many other papers and even then, we make sure the ones we use are of genuine local interest. Our rule is: if it's not local it doesn't go in. All this adds up to a good deal for you, the advertiser. You're paying less to start with; the Bulletin is full of news that the locals want to read so they are more likely to pick up the paper; there is more editorial per advertisement so there is more chance the reader will see your ad; and it's delivered free to every house.
