Junior military staff at the newly created Waiouru Supply Company have just had their first weekend off since Christmas. Sixty hour weeks would be the norm for the senior military staff as the unit grapples with complexities of changing from Central Q to Waiouru Supply Company. "It has not been an easy time," said Captain Simon Tregear, Officer Commanding for the unit. "While keeping the objectives of the changes firmly on target we are still having to juggle work with our routine operations." At the same time as vacating their premises for Waiouru's newest unit, 16 th Field Regiment, the unit reviewed all of its accounts. "We had some problems, mainly due to multiple stock locations. There were some huge accounting anomalies discovered. One example was a sealed box labelled DPM Shirts. We opened it and found 34 bowling balls!" said Capt Tregear. A large amount of excess stock was identified and returned to 1 Base Supply Battalion in Trentham, enabling the storage area to be reduced. "We've changed the way we do business. We're far more efficient. We rely on active management of inventory and resources at all levels. We are now sustaining operations with minimum inventory." Previously clothing issue involved three ports of call whereas now all are located in the same building. Central Q was formed in 1988 when Brigadier Brett Bestic and Major John Skilton identified the need to rationalise the stores functions. Before this each unit within the military camp had its own Quartermaster store.
