Constable Chris Scales has still not appeared at work, so I must put pen to paper on his behalf once more. • We have had two domestic incidents, with one resulting in the arrest of a 34-year-old Waiouru man for assault on a female. It should be noted that in any domestic incident where violence is used, it is Police policy to arrest and remove offenders immediately. • A traffic accident outside the WestPac Bank in Waiouru resulted in a very lucky escape for a young woman and an infant. A truck reversing into Ballance Road from a car-park, smashed the pillar and windscreen of a Mitsubishi car with its tray, but fortunately stopped short of injuring the driver and infant front-seat passenger. Charges are pending. • On Friday 26 March or early Saturday 27 March a Honda Accord car demolished a wooden guard-rail and rolled into a swamp alongside the railway crossing two kilometres south of Waiouru. We found
blood-stains op the roof lining, but no sign of any occupants. As the incident remains unreported, we would appreciate any further information. • On the same day a house in Maxwell Grove, Waiouru was unlawfully entered and some damage to property ensued. The Waiouru Military Police are investigating this incident. • On 30 March a 1986 Holden Camira was unlawfully taken from Ruapehu Road, Waiouru. The unfortunate driver had left his car briefly to assist another person whose motor-cycle had broken down. During this time his car was removed. Two persons were sighted walking from near where this vehicle was located in Ohakune. One of these people had a large , brown blanket wrapped around him. The other had an army Swandri on. Both the blanket and Swandri had been removed from the unlawfully taken car. Any sightings or information that may assist enquiries, would be appreciated. • At about 2.30am
on 31 March, a Ford Cortina was rolled on the hill approaching Waiouru on State Highway 49. No injuries were involved. The driver, an Ohakune man, was temporarily blinded by the head-lights of an opposing vehicle and lost control. • On the same day, a truck driver lost control of his vehicle approaching the Waikato Stream on the Desert Road. After completing two full 360degree spins he struck an oncoming car. There were no injuries, charges are pending. • On 1 April four bags of groceries were delivered to an address in Ballance Road, near the Weir Terrace end. They were placed on the rear steps of the house between 10.45am and 11.45am. On the return of the house occupier, somebody had removed the groceries. They had a total value of about $100. As a result of these actions, the retailer in this case has replaced the groceries, but is now out of pocket. Any information, please contact us. • During the early moming of this same day Turn to page 3

From page 2 a brawl took place near the FastLane Restaurant in Waiouru. The participants were a group of soldiers from Waiouru. One person ne^ded Hospital attention. The Waiouru Military Police are investigating this incident. We appreciate the attempts by several locals to cairn this heated confrontation prior to Police attendance. • On 3 April two hunters were reported over-due from a week's hunting in the Kaimanawas. A search of the vehicle parking areas was conducted and it soon became apparent the pair were OK. This is an example of how frus- • trating our job can be if hunters and trampers do not leave instructions with friends, relatives or the police as to their plans. • About a month ago, ' two heifers were reported missing from a paddock near the Waiouru Pony Club. These animals were with a larger mob and there is evidence to suggest that these animals may have been unlawfully taken. The value of the stock is around $1,200. The owner is keen to know what has happened to these animals. So are we! • A tan purse with brown fur on the front has been reported missing. It contains a driver's licence, some photographs and a sum of money. • Early on 4 April, an Army heavy recovery vehicle rolled on the approaches to the Waikato Stream Bridge on the Desert Road. Two soldiers were injured, with one being admitted to Palmerston North Hospital and one to the Army Hospital at Waiouru. • The new random breath testing law is now in place. Waiouruites (and others) are reminded that they may now be
stopped at random and required to supply breath samples. We will be operating at all times of the day and night, on the highways and within camp. We have been instructed to use the extended powers vigorously. Accordingly, chances of being stopped and checked are now significantly higher than previously. We have brochures and hand-outs available at the station which outline the new legislation in depth. • Hopefully Chris Scales will be back to continue Waiouru Police File when the next report is due. Take care.
