Pipe fixed
The potential for damage to the new Ohakune Water Treatment plant caused by hammering have been greatly reduced, the Waimarino Community Board heard last Thursday. Because of air getting into the existing raw water main, severe hammering was occurring at the plant at shut-down and start-up times. This hammering caused some major damage before it could be isolated. Technical services director Bruce Dobson said new
air release valves were working well to reduce the problem. Staff had also found that most of the air was getting into the line at the intake where a huge vortex was sucking air into the pipe. Various modifications were being tried to stop the air getting in. Mr Dobson said although the hammering was now insignificant, it would still be necessary to construct the defence mechanisms to protect the plant' s filtering equipment.
