Positives for Ohakune
Promoting a positive town image is the topic of a public meeting to be held tonight commencing 7.30pm at the Ohakune Hotel. Supported by the Ruapehu South Business Association, the object of the meeting is to establish a steering committee to upgrade the image of both Ohakune and Raetihi townships. Further community input wili be called upon once an organising committee is in place. An application for funds for employing a project coordinator has been lodged by the RSB A. The promotion is one of a number of projects being pursued by the association and stems from a public meeting held in 1992 where areas of concern were identified. These included: • Better marketing of the district.:
This area has been ad- ] dressed and improvements ] in place include an up- ] graded information service, n and new marketing manager. Bruce Rollinson works at all levels within the community to promote the district. • More added-value i products being produced within the community. • More undercover recreation space: A feasibility study on a Ohakune-based ice skating rink is currently underway. • Better events marketing: Just one event already on the community calendar is a proposed motorcycle rally to take place between Christmas and New Year, bridging the gap between Boxing Day speedway racing in Wanganui and New Year's racing in Taupo. • A need to upgrade the community image. The architect of Mainstreet Wanganui,
Bruce Dickson, was approached and has advised local businesspeople on
how to initiate a similar programme in the Waimarino.
