Ohakune hosts rally
Ihe Wellington Car Club's National Safari Rally returns to the southern Ruapehu District on 2 and 3 April. Established in 1989 using roads around Raetihi, the annual event attracts around 300 people to the area for the weekend. It is the first round of both the Central Region Rally Championship and the Rothmans Rally Challenge. The rally attracts competitors from all over the North Island. This year the rally is
based in Ohakune and contains almost twice the distance of special stages (or timed sections) as previous years, including 120km of forest roads at Karioi plus the Ohakune Mountain Road. A departure from previous years is that the rally action begins on Friday night, with a special stage up the Ohakune Mountain Road to Turoa ski field. The rally is promoted by the Wellington Car Club in association with Winstone Pulp
International forests and Ohakune New World. Where to watch The rally starts on Friday 2 April at 4.30pm, with fuelling at Ruapehu Motors, documentation at the Ohakune Shopping Court (opposite the New World Supermarket in Goldfinch Street), and scrutineering at Goddard Automotive Engineering in Miro Street. The action begins at 9pm on Friday 2 April outside Home Brothers in Old Station Road. The
first special stage runs along Station Road, under the railway line by 'The Powderhorn' and up Ohakune Mountain Road to finish at the Turoa Ski Field: 18.5km in the dark. The cars wait until they have all reached the top, and then 'tour' down to finish at the New World Supermarket again, at around 11pm. Where to watch: outside the Powderhorn. The rally restarts at 9.45am on Saturday 3 April, outside the New World Supermarket in
Goldfinch Street, when the cars 'tour' to Karioi Forest for two special stages of 28.16km and 33.54km.
