Squash volunteers praised for efforts
At the AGM on Wednesday 24 March club president John Laurenson mentioned in his report that praise and thanks were due to several members of the community for all the personal and combined efforts put in to get the new Ohakune Squash Rackets Club up and running. One of the items on the agenda was the elec-
tion of a new committee which was elected as follows: president John Laurenson; vice president Bill Scobie; secretary Kath Campbell; treasurer Diane Scobie; men's club captain Warren Swain; ladies club captain Trinette Mott; bar manager Pete Craig; committee Sarah King, Jason Frost, Robyn Bayens, Yvonne Triggell, John Baran, Graeme Rumball, Andre Moore, Phil Haanri and Pete Richards.
New Zealand Squash Development Director Butch Gifford spoke to the meeting and said the Ohakune club was as nice as any he has seen, from the 200 clubs he has visited, in the country in the last three years. He said it was essential for the new committee to listen to members needs in running the club and subsequently keep membership numbers up now that the initial 'honeymoon period' was over.
John Laurenson detailed membership numbers as; 62 full-playing seniors, 38 full-playing juniors, 1 non-playing member and 3 associate members, with a constant influx of new players joining. "A playing ladder was started last week and an internal tournament is to be held on 16 and 17 April," said a spokesperson for the club. "So be in to win!"
