Tough new drink/ drive laws Thursday
As from 1 April harsher penalties will come into effect for drink-driving. The group targeted in this latest gettough is the under-20 year olds, with more road crash casualties involving this age group than any other group of drivers. The new law puts the 'under 20' alcohol limit at 30mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood and 150mcg alcohol per litre of breath. This, in real terms means males shoulcj drink no more than one 375ml can of bear, or two cans of low alcohol beer. A can of beer, small glass of wine or a double nip of spirits could put the average sized woman over the limit. The maximum fine for a blood alcohol level of between 30mg-80mg per 100ml blood is $2,250; over 80mg/100mg blood $4,500; drink-driving causing injury or death $6,000. Licence disqualification ranges between three months to one year, and prison terms ranging from three months to five years.
Compulsory breath testing Also from 1 April police can breath test any driver for alcohol anywhere, at any time. Compulsory breath testing the chances of getting caught over the limit are much higher.
Compulsary testing is a new strategy the New Zealand Police are using to keep drinking drivers off the roads. The strategy is used at checkpoints and on patrol. Alcohol is involved in around 45 percent of all road deaths and 22 percent of all injuries in New Turn to page 6
From page 5 Zealand. Compulsary breath testing discourages drinkers from driving over the limit by increasing the odds of being caught. For full licence holders over the age of 20 the alcohol limit is 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood and 400mcg alcohol per litre of breath. This is converted into (for males) - one litre jug of bee,r, five 200ml glasses of beer, two and three-quarters "stubbies" or two and a half cans of beer; (female) - three quarters jug of beer, three and a half glasses of beer, two "stubbies", or one and a half 180ml glasses of wine.
