Commercial air stripp planned for Ohakune

Ohakune businessman Ian Heappey may soon be flying high if his plans for a new tourism-based venture takes off. The owner of the Ski Shed, Mr Heappey plans to establish a commercial airstrip on Holt Farm, 3km north of Ohakune on State Highway 49. The existing airstrip at Ohakune Airfield caters for top dressing and ca-

sual scenic flights. Mr Heappey intends to erect a permanent office on the site and has lodged an application with the Ruapehu District Council for permission. Submissions for the proposal close with the District Council on April 16. A competent pilot, Mr Heappey operated from

Whakapapa working for Mountain Air Scenic Flights around four years ago. The company has since been taken over by Commercial Helicopters, Taumarunui for whom Mr Heappey works on a casual basis. He is also an instructor with the Taumarunui Aero Club and divides his time between his interests and his Ohakune business.
