1993 year f or bowls
1993 could well belong to the Ohakune Women' s Bowling Club, with members achieving at both local and national level. The recent gold and silver medal triumph by two teams of four at the Masters Games in Wanganui was just one o'f the club's achievements. More recently members travelled once again to Wanganui to compete in the Champion of Championships, against 17 regional clubs. In the open singles, Chtistina McCleod made it through into the last* six players. A team of Vi Brown (skip), Rita Kaiwhare (3), Christina McLeod (2) and Ngaire Burrows (lead) played in the "Rinks" fours, winning their first garne and joining the final eight teams in the play-off. They beat a strong Taihape team to take the Champion of Championships Fours. 'B' Pair Merrilyn George and Christina Kaiwhare, and 'A' Pair Vi Brown and Bernice Cochrane met stiff competition on 1 March, with the 'B' team making it through a nail-biting semi-final to play off (once again) against Taihape in the finals. It took two extra ends for
the Ohakune team to emerge the winner, with just two points separating the teams. Audrey Nation competed in the Senior Singles, making it
through to the final four players. In her last season. as a junior player, Ngaire Burrows won the Junior Singles, taking the
match in the final end by one point from her Aramoho rival. Her win brought the tally of gold bars to three, out of a total of seven championship matches.
