Sale

Thursday 18 March saw a large yarding at the Raetihi sale-yards, marking also the first yarding by Ohakune-based agents, Williams and Kettle, at the sale. Elders Pastoral had a good yarding, according to their spokesman, with a strong price on older cattle. Three-year-old bullocks reached $1,160, with two and a half-year-olds fetching between $730 and $880, depending on condition. A specially advertised line of Santa Gertrudas yearlings from the Te Wheronui Partnership sold well, the top price being $735. Other steers achieved prices between $450 and $665. The majority of the 1,000-head cattle yarding and strong sheep numbers was handled by Waimarino Livestock,
who described the activity as excellent and wellsupported by buyers from the King Country, Rangitiki, Wanganui, Hawkes Bay and Manawatu. Three and a half-year-old bullocks from this firm fetched between $920 and $1,180, with good two-year-olds reaching from $780 to $820. A line of 18month Santa Gertruda steers made $720. Other 18-month steers made $660, while medium steers fetched between $540 and $600. The smaller steers also sold strongly at around $450. Sheep prices were also good. Lambs reached between $26 and $33, mixed-age ewes around $35, shorn two-tooth at $35.50 and the smaller lambs between $18 and $20. Altogether, despite the rain it was a satisfving sale.
