Brain turn-on class
It was a case of teaching teachers to teach at the weekend's Whole Brain Learning Course, held at Rangataua School. Twenty-five teachers from both primary and secondary levels attended the two day course run by psychologist Dr Noah Gordon of the New Zealand Institute of
Human Potential. Participants heard how the majority of people use just one side of the brain - typically the left side dealing with analytical thinking, and learned how to "switch on" the unused right side that deals with artistry and creativity. Such methods included identifying "friendly"
and "non-friendly" teaching environments that affect a child's ability to learn; the benefits of incorporating music and the classroom; imagery, relaxation and stress management for both adults and children. Sponsors of the course were REAP, NZEI and Rotary.
