Waiouru police file
by
constable peter Thomas
Constable Chris Scales has been missing from the Station for the last three or four weeks, so I am attempting to fill his shoes in preparing this week's Waiouru Police File. If anyone should sight Chris he might be reminded of his responsibilities in respect of honouring his share of the work-load here in Waiouru. • A traffic accident on 16 March involving a van and a car about 2kms south of Waiouru on State Highway 1 and another accident on a Waiouru farm involving a farm vehicle roll-over on the same aftemoon, created a busy day for us. Fortunately, back-up officers from Ohakune eased the pressure considerably. • Early in the moming of 17 March, a local resident was accosted by two males near the Pearce Park Golf Club. The two ass^ilants demanded money and when refused they attacked the man. The local promptly reacted with a kick to a place that causes considerable discomfort, at which point the assailants reacted by decamping at speed. Any information relating to this incident would be appreciated, regardless of how insignificant it may appear. • The speed 'Black Spot' campaign continues throughout March, with the 'Wally of the Week' award probably going to the 17 year old learner driver who was checked at 172km in a borrowed car. It is perhaps pleasing to note that no * locals' have been apprehended to date,
during this campaign. Perhaps the locals have 'inside information.' • A Christchurch man suffered moderate injuries as a result of a motor accident at the intersection of State Highways 1 and 49 on Thursday 18 March. It appears that a breach of the Give Way sign controlling this intersection was the basic cause. • Recently we have received two reports of motorcycles being tampered with. The most serious case involved two motorcycles being 'booby trapped', in that they had been chained to a garage wall. If the owner had not checked first a serious accident may have eventuated. It is possible that some foreign substance may have been added to the . fuel as well Please ensure your motorcycles, including petrol tank caps are secured adequately.
• The Oasis Hotel is promoting the 'Don't Drink and Drive' issue, by providing their shuttle service to and from the hotel, along with subsidised Mini Bus travel and the provision of low alcohol beer. On Tuesday 6 April a 'Host Responsibility' meeting will take place in the Lounge Bar of the 'O' at 6pm. All persons involved with dispensing alcohol are invited to attend. In fact everybody is welcome. See you there! Constable Pat Tasker is still training hard for the Power Lifting at the Police Games in Australia later this year. His training partner John Ward (Honorary President of the Sergeants Mess) is pushing him along. They look a bit like Laurel (John) and Hardy (Pat) but I thought that Laurel was the one who cried all the time. Best wishes anyway Pat.
