Irirangi to go

A special parade to commemorate the decommissioning of HMNZS Irirangi is being planned to take place in Ohakune in May. The original station was set up in 1942 and was officially commissioned as a land-based "ship" in 1951. HMNZS Irirangi was granted a 'Freedom' charter by Ohakune in 1977. Now, after 50 years the naval base in Waiouru is to close down and its ships company of tclegraphists is to transfer to HMNZS Philomel. The Royal New Zealand Navy band and ships company of HMNZS Irirangi will parade through the streets of Ohakune for the last time at the parade, scheduled for May. Further details of this parade (times and route) will be confirmed later.
