Optimism for kindy
Ohakune's kindergarten is one of the few in New Zealand able to approach 1993 with some optimism. Dedication and hard work by teachers and kindergarten committee, with essential backing by parents and the community saw approximately $9000 being fund-raised in 1992 - the finances badly needed for some long-awaited improvements. Most evident is the
erection of a tall dividing fence serving to separate the kindergarten from Ohakune Primary School's adjacent playing field, with work being carried out by volunteers this week. Extension of the verandah is also due to begin shortly, the addition providing an essential under-cover outdoor play area for use during the Waimarino 's long cool winter season. Accumulated funds
from a project account started by the kindergarten committee four years ago, plus Government discretionary funding of $4,600 was pooled along with last year's eamings, to finance the work. Other expenses included the replacement of worn lino in the kinder-
gartens toilet block, as well as new books and puzzles, and a work table. Ohakune Kindergarten staff praised the hard work of committee members who orchestrated numerous fund-raising activities, including a Batons Up night, raffles, pie and pizza saies, cakes stalls and saies of sweets.
