Suffrage celebrated

When New Zealand women achieved the vote in 1893, it was an event of national significance. New Zealand became the first country in the world to grant women voting rights equal to those of men. / A series of events will take place around the country, and locally, to celebr^te this important year in the lives of New Zealand women. • A meeting will be held on Tuesday 6 April, 4pm at Bee Dee's coffee lounge in Ohakune. The meeting is open to all women. A special invitation is extended to the Waimarino 's Maori women, with any ideas and suggestions for the area's celebrations, plus names of

local female groundbreakers and achievers. • A womens' dinner is to be held on Saturday 17 April, 7.30pm at Turoa Lodge in Ohakune. Guest speaker will be television journalist Hanna Wallis. Live music will be provided by the Hex Crystals, a Wellington band. Details on the sale of tickets will be published clqser to the date.
