Good time gala
By
David of RIC
Fine weather prevailed in Raetihi just long enough last week for the Primary School's gala. The warm twilight saw a large number of children and adults enjoying the huge barbecue and haangi, as well as many events and rides. Apart from the vintage fire engine rides, again ably supplied by the Volunteer Fire Brigade, motor-cycle and tandem rides proved popular with children, although the
mechanical bucking bull drew a big queue of young Vacqueros, a large number of whom came back for more! The mini-golf field was also well attended and for the less physical, face-painting was available from the preschool department. If the Taihape Gumboot Toss had also been held on the 3 March, the results may have been in Raetihi 's favour. The best adult throw
was recorded by Pine Wilson, who commented that his 32.81 metre throw was greater than his attempt in Taihape. He attributes the increase to his hay-making workout since that competition and is considering it as a new training method. Young Tony MacLean reached a respectable distance of 23.50 metres, showing promise for the future of the 'sport'. Secretary, Sandra Turn to page 7
Gala From page 6 Hutchings, reported that the gala had grossed $3,500 before payments, a good result although down on previous years. The committee wished to thank the companies (Dempseys, McCarthys, H E Webb and Prices) for their support in the advertising of the event and to all other sponsors and volunteers who gave their help.
