Teachers back to class for a weekend
A course that gives people the 'hows' for the prevention of problems for primary school children was run in Ohakune recently. "Skills for Growing" is a workshop course developed along the lines
of the Skills for Adolescence courses, and is organised with the help of Lions Clubs. The Waimarino course was held at the Ruapehu Lions Den in Arawa Street, Ohakune. The adults learn ways to
help children choose the right way to do things, and so avoid creating problems for themselves and others. The workshop is "a comprehensive blend of skill building, experiencing activities from the curriculum, discussion and
sharing", according to the introduction to the course. It is aimed at anyone who deals with children including teachers, school
administration staff, support people and parents.. The course was rewarding but hard work, said participants.
This highlighted the commitment of teachers to their jobs, said the course facilitator Barbara Laurenson. The course was
run over three days witn the second and third, Saturday and Sunday 20 &21 February, starting 8.30am those two days.
