Boards able to ban dogs

Dogs may be banned from some public places in the Ruapehu District. At last Friday's Ruapehu District Council meeting councillors passed a resolution to give community boards the power to designate no-go areas for dogs. "Most responsible persons would agree that when the public enters places like shopping areas, reserves and playing fields, they have the right to do so - without being intimidated by dogs or coming into contact with dog excrement," said council officer Nicole Middleton in her report to council. "Their safety and health should be protected."
