Pool needs people

1 Ohakune' s swimming club will go into recess unless more people come forward to help out on the committee. Jocelyn Cranston told the Bulletin last week that despite a call for more people, there were too few to form a full committee. "We've got enough coaches, and there really isn't much work that needs doing with it being such a short swimming season," she said. "And we're also quite financial so there isn't a great deal of fundraising that needs doing, but we need more people to keep the club going." She said there were lots of parents saying they will send their children along, but few are willing to help. Last year 50 children were registered, but with the colder water temperatures this year they have had only 3-4 children at each club session. The main pool has been up to 20°C and down to 15°C, while the small pool is up around 27°C. "It's been great now that the little pool's heating system is fixed. And we'd like to get a committee set up for next year when hopefully the leaks in the big pool and the heating will be fixed."

Area engineer for the Ruapehu District Council, Don Sattler, said the work on the main pool had been given a high priority. "We hope to get the big pool's heating going before next season," he said. The work is part of the 1993-94 year plan, which starts in July. It has been tagged high priority by the Waimarino Community Board, but the full council, which has made a commitment to keep rates at their present level, has to approve the work. This means there is no guarantee the work will be approved, at least for the 1993-94 year. Mr Sattler said the cost estimates for the leak repair work were based on previous repair jobs done on the pool. He said the previous repairs had failed not because of poor workmanship, but because of the age of the pool. He hopes the next repairs will last 10-15 years, but that there is no guarantee. A possibility for the future is a full rubber lining for the pool. "For next season the prospects are a lot brighter and, though we have already seen some improvements, next summer should see much more," said Mr Sattler.
